Reviews: Best practice scales
Balanced scale
The default scale in the Leapsome platform is a balanced best practice scale:
1 | Needs strong improvement
2 | Needs improvement
3 | Consistently meets expectations
4 | Exceeds expectations
5 | Superb
Alternative balanced scale
If you prefer a scale that doesn’t measure skills in relation to expectations, you can use one of the following scales:
1 | Never demonstrated
2 | Rarely demonstrated
3 | Usually demonstrated
4 | Almost always demonstrated
5 | Always demonstrated
1 | Very low
2 | Below average
3 | Average
4 | Above average
5 | Very high
Right skewed scale
Alternatively, you can use a scale that skews to the right side of the distribution, e.g., when you find that your employees mainly choose options 3 to 5. Google uses the following scale for performance reviews. It differentiates more strongly between high performers.
1 | Needs improvement
2 | Consistently meets expectations
3 | Exceeds expectations
4 | Strongly exceeds expectations
5 | Superb
We recommend using a 5-point scale, as it has been shown to differentiate well between individuals while simultaneously being easy to use.
