Learning elements are the building blocks of the Learning Module. They represent a piece of learning content: either an article, a video, a task, a quiz or an existing course in SCORM, xAPI, AICC or CMI5 format. The maximum size of an upload for a learning element is 5GB. Learning elements can be combined to form a learning path.
Admins can also create 'freely accessible' learning elements (videos or articles) unrelated to a learning path that are stored in a learning library. The targeted users (all employees or specific teams) can access these elements via the 'Your library' section, even if they haven't previously unlocked the element through a path.
Leapsome supports five types of learning elements:
Articles are the most typical type of learning element. An article can be a link to an external or internal webpage, a PDF document, a presentation, an infographic, etc. We currently support .bmp, .gif, .jpg, .jpeg, .png, .webp, .pdf, .doc, .docx, .ppt, and .pptx.
Examples may be your employee handbook, the 'Mission and Vision' page on your website, an informational article about being more productive, or a slide presentation about your career framework.
Videos uploads are similar to articles but with different format optimizations. Videos natively support YouTube links and any popular video file format (mp4,.avi,.mpeg,.webm).
Examples may be a welcome video, a tutorial video on using a specific tool, or a required data protection training video.
You can add a task as a learning element and tag users the learner should contact for this task or meeting.
Examples may be "Get coffee with someone on your team" or "create an account with our knowledge management software."
Quizzes are an interactive type of learning element. They are composed of multiple-choice questions with one or more correct answer.
You may, for example, use a quiz to see if the learner remembers essential facts from a training video in the previous step.
Existing courses (SCORM, AICC, xAPI, CMI5)
With Leapsome, you also have the option to upload existing, interactive e-learning courses to Leapsome. Files in SCORM, AICC, xAPI or CMI5 format will then show in a course player in Leapsome, which can also be extended to full screen. Learn more about this format here.
Your list of learning elements
Admins can access a list of all stored learning elements in the 'Learning' module > 'Learning Elements' section. There, you'll find a list of learning elements searchable by name and filtered by:
- Type: either article, video, task, or quiz
- Creator: the user that created the element
- Path: filter for all elements that used in a specific learning path
Create a learning element
You can create new learning elements by clicking the 'Create' button in the top right of the screen. This will open a pop-up window where you first need to select the type of element.
Please note that once an element type has been selected and uploaded, it can no longer be changed. Depending on the type of element (static content, i.e., articles and videos, or dynamic content, i.e., quizzes), you will see two different interfaces:
Creating articles, videos, or uploading an existing course:
Articles, videos as well as 'existing courses' are created via a similar form. After selecting 'article' or 'video' from the previous step, you will fill the following form to create a learning element:
- Name: the name of the learning element. Names do not need to be unique, but it is recommended, as it makes searching easier.
- Description (optional): a description of the learning element. The description will be displayed to the users when they are completing the step or viewing the element. This can help them understand what to focus on or how to best interact with the content.
- Link: a link to an article / video or a file. We support all popular file types.
- File: if you want to upload an existing course, it is required to upload a file in SCORM, AICC, xAPI or CMI5 format. Learn more about the file specifications here.
Please note: an element needs either a link or a file. The file size is currently limited to 5GB.
Quizzes are composed of multiple-choice questions that can have one or more correct answers each. You will have to fill the following form to create a quiz:
- Name: Name of the quiz
- Description (optional): Description of the quiz
- Title: question the users will answer
- Description (optional): any hint for the question
- Hint (optional): add a hint if the user fails to select the correct answer
- Answers: please check the box of the correct answer, or multiple answers if applicable
Quiz questions can be re-ordered using a drag and drop function. To enable this function, you can switch on the 'Toggle to reorder the questions' which is found at the bottom of the page.
Edit a learning element
You can edit the following aspects of learning elements at any time:
- Link or File
Editing a learning element in an active learning path will only affect users newly enrolled in that path. Any users currently enrolled in a path with that element will see the version present when they started.
Please note that editing learning elements used in multiple learning paths update all the paths!
Delete a learning element
When clicking into a learning element, first click the purple 'Edit' button. From there, at the bottom-left of the element, you will see a 'Delete' button. You will not be able to delete it if it remains on a learning path. To delete it from a learning path, navigate to the 'Learning Paths' section, go to the paths it is a part of, and delete the relevant step.
